As a garden designer with 12 years’ experience, I’ve worked on a wide variety of projects, from woodland wildernesses to tiny central London courtyards. Over that time, I’ve always sought to encourage my clients to take part in the design process. The decisions we make together can be more suitable than the decisions I would have made alone.
This experience has taught me that, by understanding the principles of garden design, everyone can create their own garden. I have just completed Andrew Dumbleton’s five-day city garden design course. I have come away with my finished garden design (drawn to scale on tracing paper and ready to build as soon as time and money allow) but more than that … I have had more fun than I ever imagined possible on a course for anything!
My garden design course mates and I were kept busy with a fabulous mixture of direct teaching, discussion, drawing, measuring and looking at garden materials (not to mention tea, coffee and sandwiches from the Spence Bakery). Each week we received the next carefully prepared set of course notes to slot into the folder provided and homework tasks.
Andrew’s wealth of garden design knowledge is delivered in such a well-thought out, ordered and relaxed manner that you almost forget you are learning something new and seem to absorb it by osmosis. Each day flew by, so did the week, and all too soon we were nearing the end.
On the final day we were joined by Audrey, who is a plant specialist. Her passion for anything that grows was truly infectious. She helped us add the finishing touches to our designs by recommending just the right mix of plants to suit our space and requirements.
At the end of the course, Andrew presented us with all the drawings we had done over the past five weeks. It was then that I realised just how much I had done and learnt in such a short space of time. I would happily and confidently measure up a garden for friends, and provide them with a scale drawn design to suit the space they have and their needs.
